Your mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. It’s wet, warm, and it comes into contact with countless foods, drinks, and other substances, not to mention your saliva. This environment is optimal for the production of dental plaque, a super-sticky bacterial deposit that clings to your teeth and attacks your enamel and gums.
If left untreated, this film of bacteria can grow, feeding on your mouth and the foods you eat like a parasite and steadily doing more and more damage. There are also some medications and diseases that can lead to discoloration of the dentin or enamel, including a couple of antibiotics that can seriously discolor children’s teeth when given to them under the age of 8.
Some mouthwashes are also known to discolor teeth, and this can also happen as a result of trauma, excessive vomiting (as with eating disorders) and gastrointestinal disease.
